Restyling and Mobile Optimization of Outdated Careers Website

In 2015, West was going through a major brand update, sparked by the recent divestiture of its telemarketing businesses and influenced by its change in direction towards communications technology. Throughout the year, this new brand spread throughout the company, granting me the task of rebranding the company assets. One of the most important rebrand projects, was our Careers site.

This website was not mobile optimized and was built on an old structure of tables and CSS. It was decided to keep the table structure of the site and build a separate mobile site. I was in charge of changing the CSS on both of these sites to follow our brand guidelines. This would have been easy if the desktop site’s components weren’t so intertwined. Making a change to the CSS in one area would alter it in five other areas with devastating effects. Since I was only allowed access to the CSS files, I had to get creative of how I would style it. Compromises had to be made, but I am proud of what I could accomplish under such limitations.

The mobile site was easier, but not by a lot. After testing on multiple phones, I found many issues with the template’s layout. Things weren’t lining up in the header, the footer was not fit to the content and some random code would show up on the bottom of the screen. Luckily, the company we were working with could provide me with a template file for the mobile site. I fixed all the bugs I could find in the template and worked with a developer from the other company to solve the others.

About a month after the newly branded desktop site was launched, we finally felt comfortable enough to launch the mobile site. The HR team reported a big increase in traffic (didn’t get a specific number), which was contributed to the convenience of applying on a smartphone.
